On January 14, 2018 Rehab 13 was requested at 1538 hrs. to respond to Burlington City to assist the Burlington City Police department with personnel support during a crash investigation. A car with two occupants was traveling at a high rate of speed along the road that is next to the Delaware River. The car struck another vehicle and then crashed through a fence and plunged into the ice encrusted water.
The driver of the vehicle self-extricated and fled the scene. The passenger did not escape and was found in the submerged car by Burlington City Fire and EMS personnel that were able to rescue the passenger wearing cold water suits. Attempts to revive the passenger by every available means were not successful. The driver was tracked down by police and their K-9 unit on the River Line train and was arrested. No further information on the names and ages of the (2) individuals in the car and the circumstances of the crash will be published on this site in respect for the family of the deceased passenger.
Rehab 13 and rehab support unit U1386 responded to the incident with (9) personnel arrived on the scene at 1629 hrs. Set-up in the VFW building lot near the scene as directed by Command CP90. Rehab 13 deployed the heated Zumto tent and provided hot liquids, hot food, and numerous snacks. The PD laser device was not working correctly due to the bitterly cold temperatures and it was placed inside the tent to warm the electronics along with personnel at the crash investigation.
Rehab 13 was on scene until being released by the Police commander at 1907 hrs. Rehab 13 returned to station to restore the apparatus for service and was ready at 2030 hrs.
