On Sunday morning January 7, 2018 Rehab 13 was dispatched to the 100 block of Stokes Road in Station 281’s local for the major commercial building fire in a plastics manufacturing facility. The 1st due fire units assigned on the task force box had fire through the roof of a large one story building discovered by a passing motorist and reported via cellular phone. There were multiple companies assigned to the fire including tender task forces from Burlington and Atlantic counties that were getting refills from a pumper drafting from Atsion Lake off of Route 206.
Rehab 13 was called at 0817 hrs. and responded with (2) apparatus initially and (8) personnel to the scene. rehab 13 assisted Rehab 439 (Tabernacle Rescue Squad) with providing heated shelters, hot food, hot beverages, hand and boot warmers, rest room, heated Zumro Tents, and folding chairs, and tables, The temperatures were in the single digits and the wind chill brought the “feels like temperature” below zero for most of the day.
Due to the nature of the material burning the Rehab sector was set up across the road and upwind from the building fire to make sure that personnel in Rehab were not in further danger from the smoke being given off by the fire. Multiple 100′ main ladders with their master streams worked the fire and were relieved periodically during the incident due to the extreme cold during the emergency.
Rehab 13 worked from 0841 hrs. until being relieved by CP 28 at 1456 hrs., along hard day of work for all Rehab staff from both companies as the weather and the amount of food and beverages prepared was a challenge due to the numerous personnel at the scene during the all day incident. Rehab 13 served 72 breakfast sandwiches and 200 hot dogs as well as (5) boxes of snack foods. Also, over 25 pots of hot coffee and 4 pots of hot chocolate were made. When released Rehab 13 units restocked and restored all supplies by 1600 hrs. that afternoon.
During the incident 13801 T. Kraft responded with U1388 to the scene to re-supply the incident with additional food and supplies. Today Tuesday January 9, 2018 by 1130 hrs. all food and other supplies were delivered and all rehab food supplies are at “ready” levels for the nest assignment. With the warming trend this week the activity should taper off. It has been busy since the new year.
The origin and cause of this fire is under investigation by multiple agencies at this time.
