A 9-1-1 call came into Camden County Communications Tuesday afternoon @ 1717 hrs. from a female reporting a fire and that her children were still in the house. Additional calls were made and finally a neighbor called reporting a garage fire and that the children were evacuated safely. First arriving Voorhees fire units checked on scene and reported a medium smoke condition on the interior and were leading off with an 1 3/4″ line to the interior. Voorhees Fire Command requested the all hands upon his arrival. Crews made the interior and confirmed a fire in the 2 car attached garage and requested the garage doors be opened up from the outside. There was some fire extension to the homes interior but all fire was knocked down and the fire was placed under control and all searches were negative for occupants.
Rehab 13 and U1386 responded to the scene with (7) personnel and set up on Whyte Drive near the fire building once Evesham ladder 2215 was able to clear the scene when released by Voorhees Command. Rehab 13 members provided liquids, cooling station with wet cotton towels and cold drinks, and made the rest room available for all. Rehab 13 was on scene from 1800 hrs. until 1911 hrs. when released by Voorhees Command. All Rehab 13 apparatus was restocked and back in service by 2000 hrs.
*A note to all Fire Companies and EMS units – If we are dispatched between the hrs. of 1600 hrs. to 1800 hrs. during a weekday assignment it takes quite a while for our members to get to the station and load supplies and respond to your incident due to rush hour traffic on Route 70, Route 73, and the surrounding roads that our members use to get to the station.
Rehab 13 uses Active 9-1-1 to track its members responding to quarters. We know while en-route to the station how many we have responding and where they are located in reference to our station. The Active 9-1-1 app has made it possible for us to see who is coming and plan accordingly. We also use the app for mapping to the scene and has solved many of the problems with the Garmin GPS units that have difficulty chewing on addresses in Gloucester Township and other out of county locations. Active 9-1-1 with the Google map function has fixed 99% of those problems. We are in the process of placing a tablet on the dash of Rehab 13 (1385) with Active 9-1-1 app installed to make reaching your scene much easier to accomplish. If this unit proves successful we will install tablets in the other two units and retire the Garmin GPS units. For the record since our inception in 2004, we have never scratched an assignment.
Units from Voorhees, Cherry Hill, Evesham, West Berlin, and Gibbsboro were on the assignment.
The fire was under investigation by Voorhees and Camden County Fire investigators.
