Last night at 1800 hrs. members of the Deer Park Fire Companies Special Services Unit – Rehab 13 was honored with a Unit Citation for their actions above and beyond the call of duty that occurred last December 31, 2017.
Rehab 13 units 1385, (Rehab 13) U 1386 and U 1388 were en-route to a rehab assignment in Harrison Township, Gloucester County when the company encountered a multi-vehicle crash on Route 295 in the vicinity of mile marker 32. Chief Kraft in the lead vehicle directed unit 1388 to stop and assess the crash scene. Unit 1388 was staffed with a crew of two that included Lt. Joseph Anderson and apparatus driver Nancy Anderson. All rehab units are equipped with EMS jump kits and an AED for basic life support . There were no other local Fire or EMS units on the scene at that time.
Unit 1388 proceeded to take a safe position and contacted Camden County Communications of the incident and gave the location of the incident. County Radio dispatched the Fire and EMS assets for that location. Lt. Anderson a, certified EMT (Former Cherry Hill Fire Department EMS member) assessed the patients involved beginning with the most severely damaged vehicle and reported his findings to Camden County of the condition of the individuals involved in the crash.
There were three children out of one of the vehicles standing alongside the guard rail. All were escorted to the interior bench seat area of 1388 for further assessment with assistance from Member Nancy Anderson. One of the children complained of leg pain and was carefully carried to the rear seat on 1388 by EMT Lt. Anderson and both crew members rendered assistance to the children and removed them from a hazardous situation on the interstate.
The 1388 crew continued to provide support to the crash victims until local units from the 1st due Fire and EMS companies arrived along with New Jersey State Police. Care was transferred to those assets and 1388 was released to continue to the original assignment.
Tonight Lt. Joseph Anderson and crew member Nancy Anderson were presented with a Unit Citation for their actions at the scene. Chief Tim Kraft and several members of Rehab 13 were at the ceremony to support their fellow members as they received their awards from the Cherry Hill Fire Department’s Chief Thomas Kolbe.
The Rehab 13 membership extends their congratulations to the Anderson’s for a job well done.
